Sound isolating headphones that make it possible to manipulate how an environment is heard.
hEAR is an experimental headset that integrates binaural microphones and stereo headphones into a pair of sound isolating ear muffs.
Environmental sounds picked up by the microphones are processed in realtime by a laptop. Digital signal processing techniques are used to add delay, shift pitches, and manipulate the stereo field in order to alter when, how, and where a listener hears environmental sounds.
hEAR makes it possible to design different perceptual experiences by shifting the experience of sound out of sync from the experience of vision.
